Simple Summer Rituals
Oh, the joy of longer days and shorter nights. The sun is hitting us in the Northern Hemisphere at a much warmer angle. The smell of grass and flowers and heat and chlorine. The taste of really ripe strawberries, new lettuce, and fresh herbs. Summer is about to hit us in all its glory and now is the time to get ready.
Every year I swear I will go swimming in the local pool and last year I went exactly zero times. So, I am committing myself to creating summer rituals that will allow me to make the most of the season. For me that means I bought a really cool swimsuit made for me by hand. I got the towels washed, and I made a note that once a week I will get up from the computer, put on the bathing suit and really good sunscreen, and spend an hour at the pool when it’s empty and I can float around by myself looking up at the sky and feeling supported by the cool water.
For gardeners in my neighborhood, their summer ritual has already started. I see them out every day weeding, hands in the dirt, looking transfixed. I have gotten my first bouquet from a neighbor and I asked her what her ritual was for enjoying her garden. She told me she takes her morning coffee out there and does not work, she just sips and walks around in her bathrobe appreciating the work she has already done. Later, after work, she weeds and waters and cuts, but her mornings are for gratitude.
For my friend who mountain bikes, his summer ritual is to set time aside several days a week and go into the mountains. He rides, but then he brings a drink and a snack and sits on the bumper of his car and spends an extra half an hour outdoors, responsible for nothing, just being happy to live where he can mountain bike.
And the farmers at my CSA love their ritual of handing over the veggies to their appreciative community. One of my fellow supporters makes sure that she washes and visits with the vegetables as soon as she gets home. Her summer ritual is to pull out all the great recipes and figure out what to make, trying only to use the veggies she’s been given and pantry staples.
